Each Thursday, we offer a window into life “beyond the MBA classroom” at a top business school. MBA Games is a collection of events that take place throughout the academic year at Duke Universitys Fuqua School of Business and culminate in a weekend of competition each spring.  The purpose of MBA Gamesâ€"which draws teams of students from 12â€"16 other North American business schoolsâ€"is to support Special Olympics North Carolina. Students do this by volunteering for events each month  (e.g., tailgating, skating, bowling) with athletes from the organization  and by participating in various fundraising events (e.g., sports tournaments, organized races, parties) and auctions (like the one described in the following paragraph). The MBA Games site proclaims that since the event’s founding in 1989, it has helped raise more than $1.8M for Special Olympics North Carolina. Each year, Fuqua Partners  organizes a fundraising auction for MBA Gamesâ€"the school’s Web site describes it as “Fuqua’s largest annual philanthropy event.” One alumnus recalled how he bid on and won the opportunity to sumo wrestle one of the core professors, with both of them wearing humongous padded suits. The auction takes place during a Fuqua Friday in mid-February. Students and professors bid on dozens of items donated by corporate sponsors and members of the Fuqua community. First established in 1909 by people such as Martin Luther King Jr, W.E.B. The organizations first major focus was actually a silent protest that they put together in 1917. The NAACP also had several progressive victories for what they represented. It is easy to say that without the NAACP; The Civil Rights Movement would not have been so successful in the upcoming years after its formation. The Civil Rights Act The Civil Rights Act was passed on July 2nd, 1964. The act created a gateway for all African Americans to a better life by taking away segregation from the country, after decades of always being treated worthlessly by the majority. Without the Civil Rights Act, we most likely would not be where we are today in regards to equality. The act was the result of many events in prior years where African Americans were segregated and treated poorly only for their skin color. It is incredible that some African Americans were brave enough to stand their ground, because of how long before the Civil Rights Movement began where it was normal to segregate people with darker skin tones. It is events such as The Montgomery Bus Boycott and The Birmingham Church Bombing that really show what it was like to be an African American in this time period. They always had to be mindful of who is in their surroundings and not to go against anyone of more rights. That is, except in the case of Rosa Parks. Montgomery Bus Boycott The Montgomery Bus Boycott was one of the most defining moments in the civil rights movement because it showed the power and passion of the African American community. It all started on December 1st, 1955, when a woman by the name of Rosa Parks was taking a bus on her way home from her workplace at a local grocery store. Back in this time, buses were segregated, so the people riding the buses were separated into two sections, black and white. Parks was seated in the front row of the colored section when the white section became filled up with people. It is common for colored people to stand up when something like this occurs, and since she was seated in the front row of the colored section, Parks was asked to stand up for a white man that needed a seat. She refused to stand up, even when directly instructed by the driver. This occurrence led to the removal of Parks from the bus, along with her arrest. After being bailed out by a local civil rights leader a day later, the entire city population decided to put together a boycott for all city buses. This meant that the entire city population, instead of paying for a bus ride, just walked to their daily destinations, such as work, school, or home. This went on for a long 381 days, until the Montgomery federal court ruled that any law requiring racially segregated seating on buses directly violated the fourteenth amendment (history.com). The city appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court. These improved Montgomery buses were integrated on December 20, 1956. The event of the Montgomery Bus Boycott was one of the first and most powerful instances of The Civil Rights Movement. Without this event, The Civil Rights Movement never would have had such a great starting point and never would have started accelerating and growing as fast as it did. This is why this event and, more importantly, the civil rights movement as a whole, is very important to our country today. March on Washington The March on Washington was a very large organized meeting that happened in the Summer of 1963. More than 200,000 Americans came together to peacefully protest The most notable part of the March on Washington was the speech given by Martin Luther King Jr. It was what is now known as the I Have A Dream speech. King stood up in front of the 200,000+ people and gave what is believed to be his greatest speech yet. One of the most notable lines from the speech is as follows: I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character (King, 1963). This line alone from the speech shows off the main idea that King wants a society in which his children will feel safe to be themselves, rather than hate themselves for who they are. The March on Washington was an event that is still very important to our country today because it shows the unity of over 200,000 people standing up for what they believe in, which is something that our country still has some issues with. Birmingham Church Bombing The Birmingham Church Bombing was a terrorist attack done by the Ku Klux Klan on Sunday, September 15th, 1963, in Birmingham, Alabama. The bombing occurred at the 16th Street Baptist Church, a church that many civil rights organizers such as Martin Luther King Jr would meet. The bomb blast killed four little girls and injured fourteen others. The four girls who lost their lives include eleven-year-old Denise McNair and fourteen-year-olds Addie Mae Collins, Carole Robertson, and Cynthia Wesley. The news of the terrorist attack created widespread national outrage. This bombing had been the third bombing in the area in eleven days. The people of Birmingham were tired of the deadly pattern, so thousands of African American protesters gathered and surrounded the scene of the bombing. This protest quickly got out of control and led to two African American men getting killed, one of them by a cop (history.com). All of this commotion forced Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. to speak up about the matter, creating a sense of control for the people in the area who felt unsafe wherever they turned. The event of the Birmingham Church Bombing was just one of the many, many instances where it was clear that something had to be done about racism and segregation in our country. The Civil Rights Movement used this event to further enhance what could be done to prevent things alike from happening ever again, which makes our world today better for the African American population. Bloody Sunday Bloody Sunday was a day in which a peaceful protest turned into a violent danger zone for anyone attending the Selma to Montgomery march. On March 7, 1965, this protest turned disastrous when police officers were attempting to stop the protesters. When the protesters refused to stop, they were beaten and teargassed, leading to many people being put into the hospital. To top it all off, the entire event was televised. This peaceful protest was being broadcasted to the televisions of people from all around the area, but it ended up being a horrific sight of innocent people being beaten and hospitalized. This event was a defining moment for the Civil Rights Movement because it showed another instance where African Americans were punished for doing nothing apart from standing up for what is right: their freedom. The Life and Assassination of Malcolm X The assassination of Malcolm X all goes back to when he was 21, when he was sent to prison for theft. While in prison, he met a man named Elijah Muhammad. Muhammed was the leader of the Nation of Islam, a different African American political and religious movement. He ended up becoming a part of the Nation of Islam, becoming an active member and even changing his name to Malcolm X all for the organization. After six years of being imprisoned, Malcolm X was released and became a minister of the Nation of Islam in Harlem, New York. After more years of public speaking and leadership experience, Malcolm X decides to leave the Nation of Islam and creates Muslim Mosque Inc, another Islamic organization. He also changed his name to El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, which is quite the upgrade from Malcolm X. In 1964, El-Hajj founded the Organization of Afro-American Unity. At this point, Malcolm X has a great life of leadership and success. So naturally, his old friend, Elijah Muhammad, was getting jealous of him. Muhammed thought that he had become too powerful. This led to the worst conclusion imaginable. On February 21, 1965, Malcolm X was shot to his death by members of the Nation of Islam while he was speaking at a rally for the Organization of Afro-American Unity, in New York City. Malcolm Xs assassination was a defining moment in the Civil Rights Movement because he was a strong leader respected by many and was very suddenly brought to a halt, ultimately putting things into perspective for those against his cause. The Assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. On the morning of April 4th, 1968, Reverend Martin Luther King Jr was shot in the neck while standing on the balcony of a motel he was staying in at the time, the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. He was in the area along with other Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) members to lead a march of sanitation workers that were on strike. King was rushed to a nearby hospital and died about an hour later. He was constantly speaking out to the people, helping anyone that possibly needed it. He was an activist. He had speeches and marches planned for every day he could possibly take, that is how dedicated he was. The last thing everyone expected on that evening was to receive the news of the death of such a respected leader. When news got out about the activists assassination, over 100 surrounding cities started to riot, which ultimately caused a lot more chaos in the situation. After a two-month search for the assassin, a man by the name of James Earl Ray was sentenced to 99 years in prison for the murder of civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr. There is actually a lot of controversy and conspiracy surrounding the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. James Earl Jones came out and said that he was not the assassin. The Civil Rights Movement reached a new level when King was assassinated. This new level brought up new successes and led to more improvements that still impact our world today. Whos Cheap by Adair Lara - Article Example It is evidently clear from the discussion that Adair Lara in  Who’s Cheap starts off the article by recounting her second date with a guy who came across as cheap to the author when he didn’t offer to help pay for gas. She stated that he was â€Å"as cheap as a two-dollar watch† (Adair, 68). Her response, in my opinion, is justified – anyone including myself in her position would be appalled. I remember that once, while I had some financial constraints, I did not pay my share of the bill with old friends, and despite knowing me, I got labeled as the cheap guy. Lara says that this reaction is commonly found amongst women. Yet they do not elicit the same reaction as males do. She wonders why this double standard still continues. She then states her main point of some traits being gender specific when it comes to distaste towards them. She particularly says that â€Å"men are beneath contempt when they are cheap† (Adair 68). I wholeheartedly agree wi th her on this point. Being a male, I have to constantly be careful in social situations, as men are quickly termed cheap, whereas my sister does not have to put in the same effort. She does say that despite women making as much and sometimes more than their male counterparts, it is usually considered ‘proper’ for a man to pick the check in a restaurant as well as offering to pay whenever the occasion arises. She does not actually state it as such up to this point in the article that what she really means is that men should always pay regardless of financial standing in comparison with the female. This idea is strengthened throughout the article. Even though this seems like a sexist stance for her to take, but once again, I can testify to the truth thereof. If I go out on a date, everyone would expect me to pay, interestingly enough, I was accosted by my mother once when I had the check divided between me and my date, with my dad saying that men were supposed to pick up the tab. Adair also states that some men are stingy by nature which is correct but in my opinion should be expanded to contain both genders. I have known some very stingy females in my life just as the author admits to. Once again it is not a trait that is gender specific yet more unpleasant when displayed by males. So this part of her argument I agree with. She also writes about a friend of hers dumping her boyfriend when he acted cheap on a movie date by handing her M&M’s one by one. I found this incident hilarious but find it hard to say how I would react in a similar situation. What might appear normal to some may be abominable to others. For example, she mentions how her own date she writes about at the beginning of the article, loved talking about purchasing his car, a feat that was likened to â€Å"buying shoes† (68) in her native California, by the author. Perhaps the author was a bit harsh on him without knowing the motive behind the act. Maybe the guy had to struggle to purchase the car and considered it an achievement which he wanted to share with those close to him. Once again, perhaps it depends on the person’s perspective or how the words are actually delivered.

Human Services Essay The book, â€Å"Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus† by John Gray, generally, explores the claim that men and women are different and it is this difference that makes relationships fail and/or succeed. Using an allegorical backdrop, he presented his hypothesis by narrating how men originally was from Mars, where, they value success, titles and positions and how women originally was from Venus, where they value relationships, communication and empathy. At a particular point, lives on both planets became meaningless until a Martian glimpsed a Venetian and the Venetians felt loved and cherished, thus, they fitted the gap missing in their lives and opted to live on earth. This story was carefully enhanced as each personality is explored, taking into account their background, their reactions, feelings, expectations as well as coping mechanisms. I can see how positive Gray is, in pursuing his claim, presenting the facts, examples as well as possibilities of the situation. I can also say that most of his concepts are true – that women are indeed very â€Å"emotional† and that men are very â€Å"logical†. On the other hand, this will only be applicable for couples who are willing to make a relationship work. I do not think this will work effectively in a relationship where, let’s say, the man does not understand how a woman think or where a man does not know that women are like â€Å"tides†. I think in the end, women are still going to give – that they will still be â€Å"trapped† in such situation where they have no choice but to give and obliged to understand men. In a way, I don’t like the idea that men fill in the void the women feel when they encounter their down moments. I don’t like the idea that a Venetian is in need of a Martian. Perhaps, I’m just in a rebellious state that I feel that way but I never liked the idea that a woman can’t live without a man in her life. I believe that women are able and are very capable to sustain a living. Such that if a woman is being beaten by her husband, or if a woman is being abused, or if a man validates his vices as a coping mechanism when he is in his cave, the woman has every right to fight back or even leave her husband. She shouldn’t let anybody step over her boundaries just because she is naturally, understanding. In the field of human services, the information about men and women will greatly help in dealing with people. It’s hard to separately discuss how acting out, catharsis and repression is related to concepts mentioned in the book so I will be citing possible examples instead. In cases of teenage drug abuse, it is important to trace how it started, or particularly, why it did. Getting these people to talk, be it a man or a woman is never easy. For one, their current coping mechanism may be a result of continuous nurturing of repressed emotions. While time is a big element in these types of situation, using Gray’s concepts teach us to allow them space until they are ready to discuss their issues. Force rarely works in these scenarios, nor is immediate rehabilitation. For youngsters, parents’ participation in this process is very crucial as children may have repressed emotions that need attention. Parents should be educated on â€Å"how to listen† while children will have to be â€Å"advised† on how to â€Å"accept† or â€Å"communicate. † For adults, one’s behavior or treatment greatly matters. Gray’s notes on how to motivate a man or a woman, or encourage them to talk will help in these types of scenarios. In child abuse or rape cases, they say it’s far easier to assign a woman to interview the victims. This is true, because women in general, know how to empathize with the victims as well as understand the situation. Men, normally, try to put on their â€Å"Mr. Fix It Personality† to help a victim feel better – which rarely works and usually pushes the victims into their own comfort zones – choosing not to talk, instead. Gray’s notes on how to make people talk starts from the very basic – being silent and being ready at any time to accommodate the victim. In dealing with the elderly or senior citizens, it will be very different. The provider has to understand that not only does gender matter here but also the psychosocial stage a person is in. Dealing with senior citizens do not constitute a relational aspect, some may even feel insulted if you try to look at it in that perspective. Gray’s ideas in considering the person’s culture (or background) and understanding the person’s individuality (gender and personality) will help in making such relationship fruitful and successful. Health services may seem very specific and require lesser attention or relational aspect. This is true. In a manner of speaking, health provided is based on the results of a test or exam conducted/surveyed on a specific community. On the other hand, some people may refuse to accept help or decline it outright; thinking that they don’t need it or their pride has been insulted. Thus, it is important for health providers to be relational, helping people understand the benefits of the help being provided so that it can be accepted more freely. Imagine, how you can convince a tribe or group to accept vaccine if they had been practicing herbal medicine all throughout their lives? Or how you can convince a community to take advantage of vaccines when their families have opted not to take them for the longest period of time? Although, I believe this is very rare, Gray’s concepts will help a person get acquainted with his/her patients by merely taking into account how men and women vary in reacting to various factors. Knowing that Gray focused on how to make relationships work, it becomes easier to apply his concepts to something general, such as human services – where people deal with other people. Gray’s concepts may even be applied or associated to a group, for Martians did belong to one culture and Venetians belong to another, and very likely, together they share or may have built a different culture too. With this in mind, relating to others will become an everyday adventure, rather than a routinary assumption and prediction of behaviors. It will constitute facts and bases on how personalities can be so similar, yet so different.

Albert Einstein One of the greatest heroes of American(and international) science and culture in the past century has been German physicist Albert Einstein. Born in 1879, Einstein used his early years to educate himself and began to think up his own methods for solving his newly found inquiries into science and higher-level mathematics. In a short time during the beginning of the twentieth century, Einstein pulled together his research and incredible intellect for unprecedented gains in science and theory used throughout the world. One need not go far to view the incredible impact that innovative genius Albert Einstein has had upon the twentieth century. His impact stretches far beyond the reaches of physics and life in the early 1900's. This physicist of phenomenal philosophy, logic, and imagination has been and still is the subject of countless catch phrases and expressions of intelligence. Albert Einstein is a forerunner of influential American icons. Because of his contribution to American scie nce and society as an immigrant, intellectual accomplishments, and discoveries in nuclear technology, it is my belief that Albert Einstein was the most influential person of the twentieth century. First of all, Albert Einstein was the most important figure of the twentieth century because of his contribution to American science and society as an immigrant. This is foremost important because of the U.S.'s status as the premier nation of the world. Albert Einstein has had one of the greatest ever influences upon the American way of life. He is responsible for many of the most famous scientific and philosophical standards used in America today. He was born in Germany in 1879, but Albert did not come to America until 1933, when he feared for his life and fled from Nazi Germany. It was at this time that he was at his greatest fame.(PBS 1) He then began his work for the United States. His discoveries have impacted all facets of American culture. The sophisticated Special Theory of Relativity in physics that he created models the behavior of the entire universe.
